Report Cards
It seems that so many things have changed since I was a child. Computers and electronic equipment have become part of everyone's everyday life. When I was in school it was a big deal when we switched from manual to electric type writers. Now type writers are a thing of the past. Everything with the school system is now done with computers. Even correspondence between home and school is done through websites and emails. The student is no longer responsible for getting their report cards signed, because this is done through the school's website.
When my sister and I were in high school getting our report cards was a big deal. My sister always struggled academically. She was never sure whether or not she was going to pass a class until the report cards came out. Back then they gave us a copy of our report cards in school and sent the original to our parents for signature. You did not get credit for the class until the signed document was back into the office. By having a copy of the card in school you at least had some lead time to prepare your parents for what was coming in the mail. There were many students that tried to sign the cards themselves, or take them out of the mail. The school would place an announcement in the local paper stating when the report cards would be in the mail and what date the parents had to return them by. This announcement helped deter some of the forgery.
My report cards were generally good. I was always anxious to get mine because I was on the fence between the A and B honor rolls.
Now that my son is in high school keeping track of his grades is a completely different experience than when I went to school. I can go on the school's website and enter the parental code that they assign to each family. I can see what assignments he has and when they are due. I can see the scores on his tests and quizzes and I can read any comments that the teacher has made regarding his performance and behavior in the classroom. I can also check his attendance. I do not have a need to use this website very often, but one of my co-workers goes on almost everyday to keep track of her son. She has had a problem with him skipping classes in the past and now she knows if he is in school or not. They also post the report cards at the end of each semester.
